Learn about some of our UMW groups:
In 2009, United Methodist Women celebrated 140 years in mission... 1869 to 2009.
March 23, 2009 was the 140th Anniversary of the beginning of the organization that we now know as United Methodist Women! On March 23, 1869, in Boston, eight women gathered at Tremont Street Methodist Episcopal Church to form the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Isabella Thoburn and Clara Swain left for India in November of 1869 as the Society’s first missionaries. It was the first of eight women's missionary societies founded by our predecessor organizations. Today, we continue the legacy of women organized for mission as United Methodist Women.
Happy Birthday United Methodist Women!
In 1947 Abernethy Methodist Church formed a local unit of the United Methodist Women, and though we may have changed over the years our purpose remains the same - We are a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
We welcome all women of the church to participate in our local unit. We have two circles that meet at different times to meet the needs of your home and work schedules.
The J.O.Y. Band co-chaired by Martha Lowe and Sharon Erwin meets 4th Thursday each month except January & February at 6:30 p.m. location rotates among members.
The A.M. group chaired by Alice Hoffman meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
For many reasons 2009 will no doubt go down in the history books as a memorable year. We are excited about the work God has planned for us and we hope you will join us in making it a memorable year for Abernethy UMW!
